Professor of Child Psychiatry and Psychiatry
Director of Medical Studies Yale Child Study Center
Medical Director Children's Psychiatric Inpatient Service Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital
In the clinical domain, Dr. Martin primarily serves as medical director of the Children's Psychiatric Inpatient Service (CPIS). The wellbeing and smooth operation of the CPIS is integral to the clinical mission of the Yale Child Study Center. The CPIS serves children with serious neuropsychiatric impairments and represents a crucial interface between the YCSC and Yale-New Haven Hospital. In addition to ensuring its clinical function and providing the highest level of clinical care, the CPIS has evolved into a model training facility for house staff and medical students
In the training and education spheres, Dr. Martin serves as associate training director for the traditional child and adolescent psychiatry program, and helped in the development of an innovative integrated program that has attracted national attention and been already replicated at one other teaching institution. Together with James F. Leckman, the YCSC's director of research, Dr. Martin has obtained federal training infrastructure funding from the NIMH to support this model program. Aside from his involvement in the post-doctoral residency training, Dr. Martin has focused on teaching and mentorship for Yale and visiting medical students. The mentorship program in child psychiatry that he has been centrally involved in developing at Yale has come to be seen as a useful and transportable model that has been since replicated at ten other institutions across the nation, as well as in yearly international conferences..
In the scholarly domain, Dr. Martin is a co-investigator in three federally funded grants (in addition to the R25 training grant, an R01 from NIMH looking at costs associated with autism and an R01 from NIMH to study the impact of black box warnings on antidepressant use). In addition to producing scholarly works, Dr. Martin has served as an organizer and disseminator of information in child and adolescent psychiatry. His edited works include two monographs and three books (two of which are the recognized as standard textbooks in the field). Dr. Martin was appointed in June of 2006 as the sixth editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and served as Editor-in-Chief as of January 2008. With an impact factor of 4.556 and a monthly circulation of 9,000 copies, the Journal is the leader among scholarly publications in child and adolescent psychiatry in the world today.
