Early Childhood Training Collaborations

of the Child Study Center

For Mental Health Professionals: The Early Child Development Externship Programs of the Yale Child Study Center offer strong, multi-faceted training in working with young children and their families. The Externships are appropriate training experiences for licensed, insured professionals in the community who wish to learn more about early child development, including the evaluation and treatment of young children and their families. Psychologists, social workers, pediatricians, child psychiatrists, APRNs, speech and language pathologists, and occupational/physical therapists currently working with latency age children and their families are appropriate candidates for the Externship programs. The externships offer 1 to 3 year part-time, unpaid, tuition based opportunities to learn to observe, evaluate, and treat young children and their families. While training in the substantive area of early childhood development, all practitioners will receive appropriate supervision by licensed clinical faculty.

For Recent College Graduates: The Harris Fellowship in Child Development and Early Childhood Education is a well-established program is collaboration between the Yale Child Study Center Early Childhood section and the Calvin Hill Day Care Center of New Haven. The fellowship represents a unique partnership between a well-established model early childhood education program and a clinical department of child psychiatry with a special focus on early childhood.

For Psychology Graduate Students: The Psychology Training Placement in Early Childhood is a track within the APA accredited Psychology Fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center. It provides strong, multi-faceted training in working with young children and their families.

For Psychology Fellows: Psychology Graduate Students can receive closely supervised experiences as Evaluators in the Early Childhood Focal Question Clinic: The Early Childhood Focal Question Clinic provides brief evaluations of children aged 8 and under.
