Beaver Pond Park/ Bowen Field, Between Sherman Parkway & Crescent Street, New Haven. This facility features a football field and stadium, a track, and regulation baseball field. Also includes lagoons and trails in its nature areas.

Clinton Park, Clinton Avenue and Bailey Street, New Haven. One of the City's oldest parks. This is a site for Little League, cricket on Sundays and a playground.

Criscuolo Park, James Street and Chapel Street, New Haven A baseball diamond and playground are sited along the Mill River.

East Rock Park, corner of Orange & Coldspring St's. New Haven (203) 946-6086 Playing fields, playground, a self-guided nature trail, picnic pavilions, an ice- skating rink, ranger station, and opportunities for sledding, fishing and kite flying.

Summit: enter from East Rock Rd. in New Haven or Davis Street in Hamden

College Woods: Orange and Cold Spring Streets, New Haven

Pardee Rose Garden: 180 Park Rd., Hamden

Blake Field(softball, Little League): Mitchell Dr. and Willow St., New Haven

East Shore Park, Woodward Avenue (1-95, exit 50), New Haven (203) 946-8790, Walking, jogging and inline skating trails. Softball, baseball and soccer fields.

Edgerton Park, On Whitney Avenue and Cliff Street, (203) 777-1886. The design of this peaceful 22-acre park listed on the National Register of Historic Places was based on an 18th century English landscape garden to emphasize the importance of open space. With facilities for walking and biking, the park features a tropical greenhouse, community garden center and horticulture library open on Sunday afternoons. Get place for a picnic! Seasonal fairs and concerts.

Edgewood Park, Edgewood Ave., New Haven (203) 946-8028. 120 acres with nature walkways, playground, ranger station with wildlife displays, duck pond, fishing area, tennis and basketball courts, playing fields and a skate park. In the summer there is a sculpture fountain where children can run through in their bathing suits.

Fairmont Park, Fair Haven Heights at Clifton Street, New Haven. Fairmont Park offers wooded trails along a rocky hillside, baseball fields and a basketball court.

Farmington Canal Trail, 940 Whitney Ave, Hamden (2030785-1482. The original canal trail that ran 80 miles from New Haven to Massachusetts is being preserved for its historical significance and for recreational purposes. A 5.5 mile stretch from Todd Street in Hamden to Cornwall Street in Cheshire is now open for biking, jogging, hiking or rollerblading. Enter the trail either from Todd Street or Brooksvale Park in Hamden.

Kimberly Field, Ella T. Grasso Blvd. and Kimberly Avenue, New Haven. Baseball and softball fields, basketball court and playground for the Hill neighborhood.

Lighthouse Point Park, New Haven. The park features a beach for swimming, a lighthouse, playground close to beach area and swings on the beach, East Rock Ranger Station, a working carousel, seasonal snack bar, and restroom facilities. Fee to enter park.

Long Wharf Nature Preserve, 1-95 exit 46, New Haven. Walkers can enjoy this trail along the Long Island Sound through a seaside ecosystem.

McClain Park, Ella T. Grasso Blvd. & Washington Avenue, New Haven. McClain is a Hill neighborhood park with basketball and tennis courts, a playground, a picnic area, and a cool summer spray shower.

New Haven Green, center of New Haven, borders by College, Chapel, Church and Elm Streets. The Green is a great spot for walking and lunching. Summer concerts and other events held on the Green visit Calendar of Events for current happenings!

Quarry Park Interpretive Trail, Russell Street, Fair Haven Heights, New Haven. Established by the local community in 1994, this 6.5-acre park in Fair Haven Heights chronicles the natural history of the area through redstone ridges, wetlands and trees.

Quinnipiac River Park, Front Street between Grand Avenue and Chapel Street, New Haven. The restoration of this lovely riverside park was completed in 1992. Relax on a bench or walk along the river while you watch the turnbridge on Grand Avenue accommodate local small craft traveling the river.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, Long Wharf Drive (i-95 exit 46) New Haven. Site of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, these 17 acres lining the west shore of New Harbor offer walkways, benches and public parking.

Vision Legacy Trail, Harbor waterfront at Canal Dock Road opposite the Liberty Belle dock, New Haven Green at Chapel Street (203) 782-4310. This commemorative brick walkway, connecting downtown New Haven with the harbor and West Haven's Savin Rock, is part of the East Coast Greenway. When completed, the Greenway will be an 80% off-road, non-motorized traffic spine from Maine to Florida.

West Rock State Park, Wintergreen Avenue, New Haven, CT (203) 789-7498 This landmark Connecticut state park features Lake Wintergreen, Judges' Cave, and walking trails. Entrance fee for cars.

Wooster Square Green, on Chapel Street between Academy and Wooster Place, New Haven. Featuring some of the most beautiful architecture in New Haven district offers benches beneath flowering cherry trees and a monument to Christopher Columbus.

Ansonia Nature & Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Rd., Ansonia (203) 736-1053 Over 2 miles of nature trails in 104-acre park with butterfly/ Hummingbird gardens, and wildflower gardens. Hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing pond, playing fields, playground, picnic pavilions, and grove. Displays and programs in interpretive building. All ages. Hours: Nature Center is open daily from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. The grounds are open till dusk. No admission fee to Nature building.

Bartlem Recreation Area, Located on Route 10, Cheshire across from Cheshire High School. Park amenities include a 90 foot baseball diamond, soccer, field hockey, "Playground in the Park" playscape and community gardens. New Skate Park - fee.

Bassett Park(Larry's Playground), Ridge Road, Hamden. This park has two playscapes, a small one for toddlers and one for older children, a big play area for sand, swings that are in the shade(great for the summer time), picnic areas, picnic tables, and ball fields.

Bayview Park, Thimble Island Road, Branford (203) 488-8304. Visit the playground or the ball fields.

Bertini Park, West Dayton Hill Road, Wallingford. Offers hiking trails and a pavilion.

Bittner Park, Route 77 three miles north of Route 1, Guilford (203) 453-8068
This park contains 15 acres of active recreation area and 102 acres of passive areas. Active area consists of a playground, one lighted softball field, jogging/walking path, rest rooms, concession stand and more. Passive area contains horse riding trails, jogging trails and acres or woodland to hike and walk.

Brooksvale Park, 524 Brooksvale Ave., Hamden. 195 acres of hiking trails, picnic areas and ball fields as well as a domestic animal zoo. Hiking trails with access to the Naugatuck State Forest. In the Winter there is 2 miles of cross country ski trails and free ice skating.

Cheshire Park, Located on Route 10 toward the Cheshire/Southington town line, this large park has a basketball court, softball fields, picnic area, theater and tennis courts.

Doolittle Park, South Elm Street, Wallingford. Ball fields, three-lighted tennis courts and two basketball courts. This park is known for its wonderful playscape.

Eisenhower Park, North Street, Milford (203) 783-3281. The park has a playground, tennis courts, backboard, and a ball field.

French Memorial Park, Spruce and Nichols Streets, Seymour. Playscape, picnic area, scenic overlook with benches, baseball diamond, football field and basketball courts.

Gary Park/ Castles in the Park, Davis Road, Seymour. Home of the all volunteer built "Castles in the Park" play area. Climbing, sliding, swinging, and bouncing playscape with a castle look.

Gateway/Orchard Hill Park, Bassett Road, North Haven. This park has a baseball field, picnic area and a playground.

John Grover Wyman Park, Blakeslee Ave., North Haven. This park is great to visit in the summer because the playscape is mostly covered in shade! There is also a picnic area and baseball fields.

Lock 12 Historical Park, North Brooksvale Road, Cheshire. Located along the Linear Park, Lock 12 contains a picnic area, one of the original Farmington Canal's locks and a museum which is open by appointment only.

Mixville Recreation Area, Notch Road, Cheshire/Prospect town line. This park houses a large picnic area, a beach with swimming and fishing in Mixville Pond.

Montowese Park, Quinnipiac Avenue, North Haven. The park features baseball/softball fields, basketball court, playground, picnic area and a roller/ice skating rink.

Northford Park,
Middletown Ave., (Rte. 17), Branford, Playground, hiking trails, and ball fields.

Osbornedale State Park, Hawthorne Avenue, Derby, CT This park features fishing areas, winter ice skating and cross-country skiing, hiking trails and a picnic area.

Prageman Park, Oak Street, Wallingford(Yalesville). Park offers a softball/baseball filed with lights, large soccer field, tennis courts, a roller/street hockey court, wall for tennis or handball, pavilion, picnic tables and barbecue grills adjacent to pavilion, and a field house with restrooms.

Quinnipiac Recreation Area, Located on Cheshire Street, Cheshire. This park offers soccer, lacrosse, picnic area and in-line skating rink.

Roaring Brook Falls, off Mountain Road, Cheshire. This park consists of falls and nature trails.

Wallace Park, Quinnipiac Street, Wallingford. This park offers a playground.

Westside Field, located on East and South Streets, Wallingford. This park offers softball field with lights, fieldhouse with restrooms, Babe Ruth League, High School baseball field, basketball court, roller/street hockey court, football field and playground equipment.

Young’s Pond, Pine Orchard Road & Blackstone Avenue, Branford. Ball fields, playground, hiking trails and a fishing area.

Boothe Memorial Park & Museum, Main St., Stratford, (203) 381-2046. A 32-acre former homestead of the Boothe Family with picnic areas and playground. Buildings with displays of early farm equipment, carriages, baskets, and ice house.

 

Hartford County

Wickham Park, 1329 W. Middle Tpke., Manchester, (860) 528-0856. Playground, picnic areas, walking trails, aviary, sport facilities, log cabin, ponds and snack bar on weekends.
