Child Care Expenses

There are services in Connecticut that help provide moderate income families pay for some of their childcare. To find more information visit Care 4 Kids.

In addition, some employers allow parents to use pre-tax dollars to pay for child and dependent care expenses. According to the Yale Benefits Office, there are a number of allowable expenses. Contact your Benefits Office to find out more.

Medical Insurance

The HUSKY Program is a program offered by the State of Connecticut, which offers health insurance for children ages 0-18 who are currently uninsured.

Health Care

Yale Student-Run Free Clinic operates on Saturdays throughout the year at the Fair Haven Community Health Center, 374 Grand Avenue, New Haven, CT 06513 phone 203-777-7411. Provides a place for New Havens uninsured to receive primary care while obtaining wellness education and access to social services.

Connecticut WIC Program is a special supplemental nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well and stay healthy. Nutritious foods are given to those who qualify at no cost to them. WIC helps women in need of better nutrition who are pregnant, breastfeeding or just had a baby. WIC also assists children and foster children under 5 years old. Working families may also qualify. Call Toll Free in-state at 1-800-741-2142 to ask for the nearest or most convenient office. When you make an appointment you will find out which form and documents you need to bring. WIC staff will confirm if you qualify, and will review what you need to apply.

Hill Health Center provides accessible, comprehensive and quality primary and behavioral health care to low income and undeserved residents in the Greater New Haven area.

City of New Haven Health Dept. has a listing of local clinics that offer immunizations at a low cost or for free.

Fair Haven Community Health Center, provides Prenatal Care, Comprehensive Primary Care, Wellness Center, Pediatric Care, Social Services, On-Site Laboratory, Youth, Nutrition, and Special Programs in the Greater New Haven area. The Center is a participating provider in many health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. For those without insurance, payment is assessed on a sliding-fee scale. Funding from Federal, State, City, and private sources helps the Center maintain its fiscal viability while serving many patients who are unable to pay. Milford Health Dept., 82 New Haven Ave. Milford (203) 783-3285 Immunization Clinic 2nd Tuesday of each month 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Immunizations and TB are free for children under 18. Adults range from $5-$80.

Naugatuck Valley Health District, 470 Howe Ave, Shelton, CT 06484 203-924-9548 Immunization Clinics are held on the second and last Tuesday of each month from 2:00 PM-3:30 PM by appointment only. Immunizations are provided to all children that do not have health insurance to cover vaccines. A child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have a record of all previous immunizations given. The charge for immunizations is $5.00 per family for each visit. Phone. (203)248-4528 Mom's Clinic is a school Based Health Center at Hamden High, 203.248.6107. It is a licensed outpatient clinic and provides a full array services. Mom's Clinic is operated by the Quinnipiack Valley Health District, and supported through a grant from the State of Connecticut. Monday through Friday 8:00am- 2:00pm. The Clinic is open during the school year except legal holidays and vacations. (See After Hours Policy.) There are no fees for services performed at the clinic. Fees are covered by a grant from the CT Dept. of Public Health for all students, with or without insurance.

Saint Raphael's Healthcare System Smiles to Go The first of its kind in Connecticut, Smiles to Go! is a mobile dental clinic on wheels that travels to elementary schools and other locations throughout the city to provide basic dental care to those in need.The 40-foot clinic-on-wheels is staffed by a pediatric dentist and hygienist, and features two examination/treatment rooms for basic dental services, including routine cavity repair. Studies have shown that good dental care is essential for overall health and well-being. Lack of dental care can lead to other serious health problems. For more information, call (203) 867-5414.

Saint Raphael's Healthcare System Project Mothercare For more than a decade, the award-winning Project MotherCare has been traveling the streets of New Haven and surrounding towns providing prenatal care to pregnant women, as well as primary care. Services also include physicals and immunizations, as well as nutritional and substance abuse counseling. The clinic, housed in an 18-wheel tractor-trailer on wheels, travels to different neighborhoods each day, and follow-up referrals are made as necessary. Saint Raphael's Healthcare System Project HOPE Project HOPE is an award-winning Saint Raphael's initiative that provides training, education and counseling to women who are making the transition from welfare to work. More than 100 women have graduated from the program since its launch in 1997. Participants receive classroom training and one-on-one mentoring on topics such as interviewing, resume preparation, time management and customer services, and are taught about workplace diversity and meeting employer expectations. Saint Raphael's Healthcare System Project Eldercare Saint Raphael's award-wining Project ElderCare has eight clinics that provide primary care and social services to hundreds of seniors in easy-to access community settings, including elderly housing complexes. Saint Raphael's Parish Nurse Program reaches out to 32 community churches and synagogues. The program consists of volunteer parish nurses, who are each members of their specific church or synagogue. The parish nurses work with and actively recruit other volunteers to provide health information and community referrals in their house of worship, as well as sponsor screening and support groups for members of their congregation.
Most are registered nurses, and Saint Raphael's provides an intensive nine-week training course that covers everything from spiritual wellness to the importance of listening and learning.
The program is designed to help eliminate confusion about healthcare services and to improve access to health care. Services might include blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, diabetes and vision checks or flu shot clinics, and some nurses follow up on members who have health problems or were recently released from a hospital, to help ensure they are getting services they need. Saint Raphael's WIC Program WIC is a federally funded program that nourishes more than 11,000 women, 15,000 infants and 33,000 children each day in Connecticut. The programs goals are to prevent health problems and improve nutrition. WIC provides vouchers for specific foods--milk, cheeses, eggs, fruit juice, dried beans and peas, peanut butter, and iron fortified cereal and infant formula. Eligible participants enroll in the program at their local WIC office, like the one at Saint Raphael's, which serves more than 2,500 clients in Greater New Haven. WIC does more than just supply nutritious foods. It also provides individual counseling and group classes. Mothers learn about good nutrition during pregnancy, while breast-feeding, and throughout early childhood. They also learn about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of health care and immunizations. To be eligible, participants must meeting medical need or income criteria. Saint Raphael's Sister to Sister Program: Since 1995, the Hospital of Saint Raphael has been a proud participant in the Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (CBCCEDP). This program is both Federal and State funded and is offered at the Hospital in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Public Health. The program provides free breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services. Eligibility criteria to participate in the program are women, who are 40 and older, uninsured or underinsured and have a low income. Women who participate in this program may also be eligible to participate in WISEWOMAN, a program offering free blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes screening. We're Special Too! is a free sibling support program for brothers and sisters of children with special needs, such as hospitalization, handicapping conditions, chronic or terminal illness. Sponsored by the Friends of the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and coordinated by a Certified Child Life Specialist, this program encourages self-expression and develops trust in a fun, creative environment. Consignment stores and tags sales are great ways to obtain furniture and toys at a discounted price. Find a consignment store near you in the yellow pages.

Before you buying pre-owned items like cribs, toys, or car seats, you can get a list of items that have been recalled at Consumer Federation of America Foundation, Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CT Safe Kids.

New Haven Reads: The Book Bank serves as a central point for the collection and distribution of new and gently-used books. Books are distributed to various locations such as schools, community centers, and churches. Members of the general public are also invited to stop by the Book Bank for free books. Fiction and non-fiction covering a wide range of subjects are available.To contact the Book Bank, email Chris at cnalex@aol.com or call 752-1923.The Book Bank is open to the public during the following hours: Monday - Friday: 1 - 6 and Saturday: 12 - 4. Your FREE library card from your local branch will let you take books from any library in Connecticut. You may also borrow CD Roms for the computer and children's videos. Many have great children’s sections with toys, computers, storytimes, and special events. They lend a variety of FREE and reduced-price passes to area museums, check your local branch for details.

Connecticut Department of Labor Free Workshops Offered At CT Works Centers in Hamden and New Haven. Calendar of Events

Empower New Haven exists to serve the New Haven residents of the neighborhoods located in the federally designated Empowerment Zone. We are doing that by supporting various agencies that are focused on helping residents develop job skills, seek out job opportunities and improve levels of education. In addition, we support initiatives that help residents overcome obstacles to obtaining employment, and factors that prevent them from keeping employed. In addition, we are helping residents improve their overall quality of life by adding substantial financial support to homeownership offerings available in the EZ neighborhoods.
