Possible Relationship Between Tic and OC Symptoms And Infections
We are currently recruiting selected children with OCD and/or tic disorders to participate in a study, which will examine possible relationships between strep infections and acute exacerbations (worsening) of tic and obsessive compulsive symptoms.
This study is a longitudinal study that will follow your child prospectively over a two- year period. Your child must be between the ages of 7-14, with a prepubertal onset of OCD and/or chronic tic disorder to be considered for this study. If after completion of an initial screening visit and blood draw, your child is found to be eligible to participate, additional evaluation visits will follow. Monthly throat cultures will be completed either by your child's pediatrician or, here, at the Child Study Center. Parents will also be contacted by telephone on a monthly basis, over the 24 months, to collect information regarding severity of symptoms. Every three months and at times of symptom exacerbation, a visit will be made to the Child Study Center for symptom assessment and a blood draw.
The hope is that results of this study will add to our knowledge about the possible relationship between strep and other infections and these disorders. If you are interested in learning more about this project, please call (203) 737-5814 and ask for Heidi Grantz, Project Coordinator; or Jessica Otka, Recruitment Coordinator (203) 785-7985. Please note that participation is generally restricted to those who live within driving distance of New Haven since it is necessary that subjects visit the clinic periodically.
