The Glaucoma Section is the largest clinical section at the Yale Eye Center, with a staff of internationally respected physicians and research scientists. Dr. James C. Tsai, Dr. Bruce Shields and Dr. Hylton Mayer offer a complete range of services for patients with glaucoma, cataract and related diseases. With continued study to improve our understanding of the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, they offer the latest advances in treating the most difficult forms of glaucoma. Physicians provide consultation in the diagnosis and management of difficult glaucoma problems.

Physicians are fellowship trained and play a vital role in bringing new modalities in diagnosing and treating these diseases into practice. For example, this Section was the first in the region to introduce computerized perimetry and has recently obtained a scanning laser ophthalmascope for quantitative optic nerve head analysis.

The Section utilizes state-of-the-art instrumentation such as Octopus and Humphrey perimetry, Heidelberg Retinal Tomography, Zeiss fundus stereophotography, and Argon and Nd-YAG laser systems. The operating rooms have recently been renovated and contain advanced ceiling-mounted Zeiss operating microscopes and the Alcon Series 20,000 phacoemulsification system.

Among special services offered by this Section are the following:

• Cataract surgery: state-of-the-art sutureless techniques including phacoemulsification
• Computerized and manual visual field assessment with custom programs
• Gonio, slit lamp, and stereo fundus photography
• Confocal scanning laser optic nerve evaluation
• Quantitative color vision assessment
• Evaluation of glaucoma suspects
• Management of complicated glaucomas, including glaucoma implant surgery
• Combined cataract and glaucoma surgery or cataract surgery in eyes with prior glaucoma surgery

Your Appointment: What to Bring with You

The Yale Eye Center physicians ask that you bring the following items with you for your appointment:

• Your current eyeglasses and/or contact lenses
  
  
• List of all current medications (include the name of the medication and the dosage)
  
  
• Medical records that relate to your current condition. This should include X-rays, CT scans and any additional test results or copies of medical records
  
  
• Your current health insurance identification card and any referral/authorization forms that may be required by your insurance company.
