Laser Vision Correction at Yale

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Am I a candidate?
A: To be a good candidate you should:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • have stable refraction (eyeglasses/contact lens prescription)
  • be in good medical health
  • not be pregnant or nursing

Q: Is laser vision correction covered by insurance?
A: It is considered an elective procedure and is usually not covered by insurance companies.  We currently accept cash, check, credit cards or can arrange a payment plan with CareCredit. There is a discount for our corporate partners, Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital employees and their families.

Q: What technology do you use?
A: Dr. Lee uses the latest and most advanced technology to make your procedure as safe and efficient as possible.

Intralase LASIK with VISX CustomVue Wavefront-Guided Technology
WaveScan wavefront sensor is used to obtain an optical map that is unique to each eye. The Lasik flap is constructed with the 100% blade-free Intralase Femtosecond laser. The VISX STAR S4 Iris Registration Eximer Laser System is used to perform “custom” ablations to minimize higher-order aberrations.

Q: Can I have both eyes treated the same day?
A: Yes. Most patients prefer taking fewer days off from work and reducing the amount of healing time.

Q: Is it safe?
A: Yes. The overall complication rate is approximately 1-2% and includes under-correction, overcorrection, flap complications, and infection.

Q: What are “enhancements?”
A: If your vision is under or over corrected, it is possible to improve your vision with additional laser treatment. The enhancement rate is approximately 5-15%, depending on your original prescription.

Q: How does laser vision correction affect my need to use eyeglasses as I get older?
A: Everyone needs help reading up close by middle age. If your nearsightedness is corrected by LASIK, you may need to start using reading glasses in your forties.
