Tuesday, Thursday 2:30-3:45 SHM B-147
Instructor in charge:
David Zenisek
david.zenisek@yale.edu
This seminar course will explore a diverse range of current topics in physiology,
emphasizing readings and discussions of recent primary literature. Faculty of
the Physiology and Integrative Medicine track will lead discussion and present
on-going research in their laboratories, covering topics such as structural biology,
membrane transport, signal transduction, sensory systems, exercise physiology.
The aim of the course is to understand how physiological approaches integrate
the study of organismal function from genes, to systems, to behavior and disease. Course
Requirements: (1) Students must read the assigned papers in
preparation for the TUESDAY meeting; one student will be designated as discussion
leader each week. Active participation in discussion by all students is expected.
(2) A 2-page (double-spaced) commentary on those papers will also be due
on TUESDAY of each week. The paper should reflect your thoughts/ideas that come
from reading the assigned papers: what are the next experiments to be done, larger
implications of the work, alternative approaches/interpretations, etc. David will
read and comment on all papers each week.
* All papers must be handed in
at the beginning of the Tuesday class; you may skip only one (1) paper. If you
miss more than one paper, you will not meet the requirements for the course.

FINAL: The students will pick one faculty member from the scheduled list of presenters
to do an in-depth directed readings (3 meetings, 1 hour each) aimed at preparing
a 10-page final research proposal of realistic (-like) experiments. A final oral
presentation of the written proposal is required at the end of the course.
