Curriculum
for the First Year in the Physiology and Integrative Medical Biology Track
Following the general
orientation program of the BBS, the students will receive an orientation to the
Physiology and Integrative Medical Biology Track. Each student will be matched
with an advisor who is a member of the Physiology and Integrative Medical Biology
Track. This faculty member has the responsibility to advise the student who has
not yet begun thesis research. Students are expected to design a suitable
program of courses in consultation with their advisor. REQUIRED, RECOMMENDED and
ELECTIVE courses constitute a total of 6 semester courses. Three are required
courses. Three other advanced courses will form a coherent background for the
expected area of dissertation research. Each student should develop his or her
own curriculum in a manner that satisfies these expectations and depends on the
prior training of the student. All courses will be chosen in consultation with
the student's advisor and based on student's interest and needs (e.g., cell biology,
genetics, pharmacology). The Director of Graduate Studies provides approval of
the course selections made on-line by the students. REQUIRED COURSES
The required course work will be taken by all students in the Track allowing
students to acquire a broad knowledge of interrelated physiological, pathophysiological
and pharmacological mechanisms at diverse levels of understanding: whole-organism,
system, organ, tissue, cell, subcellular components and molecules. CMP
520a: Current Perspectives in Physiology
*CMP 550a: Physiological Systems CMP
560b: Cell and Molecular Physiology: from Fundamental Mechanisms to Human Disease
*Students with prior training in systems physiology may be exempt in
consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies. If a student exempts CMP 550a,
then three courses instead of two must be selected from the recommended
course list. RECOMMENDED COURSES At least two courses
should be selected from the recommended
course list. ELECTIVE
COURSES One course of the first year is fully elective and is chosen in
consultation with the student's advisor. The elective course can be any course
in the graduate school. | |
