Regional Professional Development Centers

The School Development Program Professional Development Centers, each with different professional development offerings, are located in Chicago, Illinois, and Prince George's County, Maryland.

Chicago Training Information

Prince George's County Training Information

Designed to provide knowledge of the essential nine elements of the School Development Program and supporting theories. Participants are expected to return to their school districts with enough information to enable them to present the program to other school and parent groups. The participants are also expected to begin the SDP in new schools. It is advisable to send a team from the district. Some districts have sent parents, teachers, central office administrators, board members, and principals or a combination of these. Preference given to districts with SDP contracts.

Leadership 101 focuses on the content of the Comer Process. This basic academy is designed to assure that participants:

  • Can organize and deliver orientation sessions on the Comer Process
  • Have a working knowledge of the nine components of the Comer Process
  • Understand the Six Developmental Pathways as a foundation for the Comer Process
  • Are prepared to apply strategies of change
  • Develop specific strategies for implementing the Comer Process in their own schools or districts
  • Know how the Comer Process fits in with other local initiatives

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MARYLAND TRAINING INFORMATION
The Prince George's County School Development Program Professional Development Center Provides in-depth dissemination of the School Development Program to individual schools, consisting of training events and visitations to demonstration schools. The center works closely with the Yale School Development Program Office. They offer the following training opportunities and site visits:

Prince George's County Two and A Half Day Comer Orientation Training and Site Visit

This orientation consists of two and a half days of workshop time and a half day of school site visitation.

After an orientation at our training center, visitors will tour two Comer schools meeting with staff, parents, and students. They will also receive an individualized "Back Home Planning Session" with the Comer SDP Supervisor.

An intensive one-week course on the Comer School Development Program. Participants will learn the social history and the nine components of the Comer SDP, gain an understanding of the developmental pathways and how to apply to their school setting, practice DOL notetaking techniques, learn the major responsibilities of the three teams of the SDP and their interrelatedness, learn the relationship between "Faithful Replication" and "Student Centered Planning," explore the concept of change and its impact on the implementation of the SDP, learn and practice verbal skills to facilitate communication on school teams, practice the processes of brainstorming and problem solving, identify and practice the elements of effective teaming, deepen their understanding of the developmental pathways and utilize effective team processing skills through "safe practice" on mock teams.
