Society of Distinguished Teachers
 To
honor, preserve and enhance the legacy of medical education at Yale Medical
School – this is the mission of Yale's
Society of Distinguished Teachers. Our medical school established this
Society in 2002 to recognize outstanding medical educators. Each member
has been a recipient of one or more of Yale's major teaching awards.
They take strong and active role in advancing medical education by
participating in curriculum reforms, funding educational initiatives,
advising junior faculty, and mentoring students throughout their time
at Yale Medical School.
In some unique way
each member of the Society of Distinguished Teachers has found the
key to connecting with those who follow them. Their dedication, wisdom,
and commitment have deeply influenced young men and women to carry forward
a legacy of contributing to the advancement of medicine through their
roles as mentors and educators. Yale's educational mission
of training leaders in medicine could not possibly be realized without
this cadre of gifted educators. Ultimately, this organization of truly
distinguished teachers must carry out its stated mission of honoring,
preserving and enhancing this legacy. They will accomplish this mission,
not simply by passing the torch on to the next generation, but by actively
assuring that those who follow them will have been encouraged and enabled
to carry it.
Important Funding Announcement:
Distinguished Teacher Awards @YSM
Over the past few months, a small working group of the Society of Distinguished Teachers has put together a funding announcement for what will be called Distinguished Teacher Awards. After consideration of our resources and discussion of our mission - to preserve and enhance the legacy of medical education at Yale - the working group has decided upon this first course of concrete action. Besides funding either full time faculty or community physician projects, these initiatives will include a clear mentoring component for participating Society members, which is fully described in the funding announcement.
Please review the materials and consider applying for
funding. Our goal is to have these projects both funded and started by
this fall. Hopefully, by early June, 2006 participating faculty will have
an opportunity to describe their work during the events of medical alumni
weekend. Be aware that the Yale graduating Class of 2005 has just added
a generous $2,000 gift to funds that have already been received through
alumni gifts. A copy of my response to the class is shown below. Any comments

Dear Members of the Graduating Class of 2005,
On behalf of the Society of Distinguished Teachers, I am pleased and
honored to gratefully acknowledge your generous graduation gift of $2,000
to the Society. This is a wonderful gesture that carries significant import
for our Society, as we embark upon plans to fund real initiatives in medical
education. The first of these grants will be made this year, and will foster
collaborative efforts between faculty, community physicians and members
of the Society who will serve in mentorship roles.
The mission of this Society is to honor, preserve and enhance the legacy of medical
education at Yale Medical School. Your gift helps to insure the realization
of that mission in the immediate future.
On behalf of our entire membership,
I recognize and applaud your contribution to continuing this rich legacy.
When you return as alumni, the results of these efforts will hopefully
be evident to each of you. We wish you well in your new roles as both
physicians and Yale alumni. What a great way to begin.....
