Commencement 2004

“What makes you do the right thing? The distinctiveness of medicine is that you are called upon to ask yourself this question almost everyday. And I can tell you—if I may be blunt—that the answer is not joy. Oh, sometimes it really is fun. But the truth of medical life is that doing the right thing is often painful—and yet you find a way to do it anyway.”
—Atul Gawande

Bagpipes sounded. The class recited “A Yale Oath.” Surgeon and writer Atul Gawande reflected on the character of a physician. Graduate Nduka Amankulor applied his operatic talent to “The Star Spangled Banner.” And most importantly, the sun shone—a little.

For photos from Commencement 2004, as well as Dr. Gawande’s speech, remarks by Interim Dean Dennis Spencer and Associate Dean Nancy Angoff, contact information and other content, see below.
