Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases

Research

The faculty and students in EMD carry out interdisciplinary research ranging from field and laboratory based studies in vector borne diseases, to emerging infections, to host defense and pathogenesis. Students have unique opportunities to use the Department's special laboratory facilities for bio-containment of infectious agents and for rearing and studying arthropod disease vectors. The faculty members also have extensive international collaborations underway in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Russia, which the students participate in.

Ongoing research projects include

  • Epidemiology of Hepatitis C among Drug User Networks
  • Evaluation of Comprehensive Programs to Reduce Disease Mortality and Morbidity in Injection Drug Users
  • Surveillance of Foodborne Illnesses
  • Evaluation of Peridomestic Lyme Disease Control Efforts
  • Impact of Infant Vaccination on Influenza Hospitalization Rates
  • Optimizing Hepatitis B Vaccination for High Risk Populations
  • Interaction of Tsetse, Symbiontic Hora and Trypanosomes
  • Molecular Epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Biology and Control of Lyme Disease Borrelia
  • Surveillance and Control of West Nile Virus
  • Population Genetics of Disease Vectors
  • Leishmaniasis Vaccine and Mechanisms of Pathogenesis
  • Regulation of Gene Expression in Trypanosomes
  • The TNF Family in Murine Models of Type I Diabetes Mellitus, Multiple Sclerosis, and Lymphoid Organ Development
  • Syringe Availability and AIDS Risk
  • Behavioral and Molecular Epidemiology of Chlamydia Infections
  • Spatial Mapping of Sexually Transmitted Infections
  • Infectious Disease Modeling
