Alcohol and HIV Risk Reduction in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation
Russia has one of the highest HIV incidence rates in the world with HIV prevalence increasing 100–fold between 1998 and
2003. While HIV prevalence in the general population remains low, younger people with high–risk sexual behavior, high levels
of alcohol abuse, and low levels of knowledge about HIV transmission provide fertile ground for an HIV epidemic generalized
in the heterosexual population.
This study focuses on developmental research to design and field test a culturally adapted behavioral risk reduction intervention for individuals who use alcohol and are at risk for HIV infection in St. Petersburg.
Results from the proposed research will provide critical information about the role of alcohol in HIV transmission risks and will offer urgently needed strategies for improving HIV prevention interventions in St. Petersburg.
