International Clinical, Operational, and Health Services Research and Training
Award (ICOHRTA)
The ICOHRTA supports training to facilitate clinical, operational, health services and prevention science research that is collaborative
and multidisciplinary. The collaborations through this award are between U.S. institutions and those in developing
countries,
as well as those in Eastern Europe and Russia. The program focuses on promoting local ownership by placing the initiative and
operation of related activities within the developing country.
Currently EMD Faculty are involved in ICOHRTA programs in:
- Russia — the goal is to develop a center of excellence in research training in St. Petersburg, a TB–AIDS Clinical Training
and Research Unit (TACTARU) that can, in turn, train a new generation of medical scientists to develop appropriate responses
to the emerging epidemics of TB and AIDS. TACTARU sends individuals to Yale University and the State University of New
York for training and is developing programs in St. Petersburg using the expertise of five local partner institutions.
- China — the five–year program aims to develop an independent HIV/AIDS training center within the China Center for
Disease Control equipped to provide assistance to other national academic and research institutions in the training of health
professionals and researchers to combat the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic.
