Liberia Health Management Development Program

Beginning in June of 2007 and designed in response to the vision of Liberia’s Minister of Health, the Mother Patern College of Health Sciences/Stella Maris Polytechnic located in Monrovia, Liberia partnered with the Yale School of Public Health and the Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS Initiative to offer a Health Systems Management course. The goal is to establish a management course to provide health care professionals from hospitals, local organizations, and county health teams with practical leadership skills and problem-solving tools needed to effectively manage health systems.

This course allows participants to learn and apply skills in the areas of strategic planning and implementation, human resources development, financial management, and leadership. The collaborative nature of the course facilitates the development of a community of learners who can work together to effectively implement the Liberian National Health Plan. We are currently writing a Toolkit for Health Systems Management in Liberia.

In addition to the management course, five Yale–Clinton Foundation Fellows have been placed in hospitals and County Health Teams across Liberia and in the MoHSW, to mentor teams of health professionals in the improvement of key management and leadership capacities.
