Health Management
Liberia Safe Surgery Project
The Liberia Safe Surgery Project is a partnership between YSPH and
Liberia’s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to provide education
on formal safety standards for surgical procedures. A surgical
safety checklist developed and written by health professionals under
the authority of the World Health Organization’s Second Global
Patient Safety Challenge for use in hospitals worldwide, will promote
adherence to safe surgery practices. This checklist will be used
throughout surgical interventions, from pre–induction of anesthesia
to post–wound closure.
 |
We anticipate that consistent use of this checklist, together with
an educational intervention on safe surgical practices, will increase
the use of established safety measures, thereby improving surgical
outcomes. The study will assess the impact of this intervention on
changes in surgical practices and surgical outcomes, including rates
of surgical site infection, blood loss, serious anesthetic complications,
total major complications, and peri–operative mortality.
