M.S. and Ph.D. Graduate Programs
Christian Tschudi, Ph.D., Director of Graduate Studies The graduate program in Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH) offers both a Master of Science (M.S.) degree as well as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Both of these degree programs are administered through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The EPH Doctoral Committee and the Director of Graduate Studies are responsible for overseeing the progress of these students. The M.S. in EPH is offered in two specialty areas: Biostatistics and Chronic Disease Epidemiology. The Biostatistics track is a two-year program. The Chronic Disease Epidemiology track is a one-year program. This degree program puts great emphasis on mastering the skills in individual specialty areas within public health. It is designed to train individuals for work in high demand fields such as biotechnology and medical research in the pharmaceutical industry. The M.S. degree is a marketable terminal degree for those who choose not to pursue a Ph.D. degree. The primary mission of the Ph.D. program is to provide scholars with the disciplinary background and skills required to contribute to the development of our understanding of better ways of measuring, maintaining, and improving the public’s health. The five divisions that grant a Ph.D. within EPH are: Biostatistics, Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases, and Health Policy and Administration. Examples of research conducted by Ph.D. students includes but is not limited to: cancer epidemiology, clinical trials, cardiovascular disease, molecular epidemiology, vector-borne diseases, parasitology, mental health epidemiology and HIV/AIDS. Students are encouraged to work with faculty throughout the university since much of the work done in EPH is interdisciplinary. Graduates of the Ph.D. and M.S. programs generally begin their careers working as postdoctoral fellows or junior faculty in academic institutions, government agencies or pharmaceutical companies.
