News for 11/2/2005Below is information all the cool kids at EPH will be knowing--don't be left outThese wildly informative emails are also archived at http://publichealth.yale.edu/phlibrary/news.html to help you through those sleepless nights when the walls feel like they are closing in and you are wondering about your place in the world. --Printing from your latop and secret printing tips ------------------------ Printing news (secret or otherwise) You can now print to the printer in the library from your personal laptop. And PhD students can also print to the PhD room printer. There are reasons as to why this is limited to the these printers and not all printers. The reasons are complicated and the tale is full of woe. But it all boils down to this: no. Trust me. Bad things would happen. Instructions for Windows is at http://publichealth.yale.edu/phlibrary/printlaptop.html . Mac instructions are forthcoming. In the meantime just bask in the glow of your superior operating system.
I also want to pass on a top secret printer troubleshooting tip. If you send
something to the printer and it seems to disappear in that it no longer appears on
the print station listing but nothing is printing, try this: --------------------------- Getting help, contacting me The best bet to get help quick on anything related to the library is to send the email to eph.lib@yale.edu If you need to get in touch with me (matt wilcox, chief, cook and bottle washer), email is often best, and using a descriptive subject line is well, descriptive. I also post office hours at the beginning of the week. Due to the go-go lifestyle I lead, these change week to week. The library staff can call me for emergencies. Also, remember we have the wonderful SAS gurus Kam and Kate (or are they SAS Sherifs this year... hard to keep track... Next year I vote for SAS Assassins) and Ming--all of whom have office hours listed on the office door across from the computer lab. ---------------------- Open positions: 1) Student web programmer 2) Student Researcher ------------------------- A mongoose is any member of the Herpestidae family of small, cat-like carnivores. Mongooses are found in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and southern Europe. There are more than thirty species, ranging between one and four feet in length. Mongooses feed on insects, crabs, worms, lizards (including iguanas), and other small creatures (as well as eggs and sometimes fruits), but they are best known for their ability to fight and kill venomous snakes such as cobras (ophiophagy). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongoose EPH Library: 10221 days mongoose free. -------------------------- Data reminder It has happened once already this semester. Someone has had a hard drive crash. Data lost. Weeping. Please remember, your data is your responsibility and your problem. The Management is not responsible for it as The Management is not trying to get a degree using it. We do, however, take steps to help you protect your data, such as reminding you that you should be practicing safe computing. The is no such thing as a Data Fairy that will save your data if your hard drive fails, or your zip disk stops working, or if a virus fries your computer. But using your backed-up nightly P-drive, emailing important files to yourself, keeping your operating system and anti-virus software up to date, and backing up your files will help. More about this at http://publichealth.yale.edu/phlibrary/safecomputing.html. Be paranoid and back up your data. ------------------------------- This email was written under the Ska influence of the Madness CD ("One Step Beyond") Hip-Top Anonymous was sharing on iTunes--happy happy joy joy music which is fun for awhile. Until it makes you feel kind of old because you can remember how long ago it was when you first heard it.
