Saeed was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Student Research Training Fellow during the 2000-2001 academic year. Project title: Elucidating the Contribution of Chemokines and Cytokines to the Immunopathogenesis of Visceral Leishmaniasis. Mentor: Diane McMahon-Pratt, Ph.D., Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health. He is also receiving support for a second year of research from HHMI.

Mathew was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Student Research Training Fellow during the 2000-2001 academic year. Project title: Identification of the T cell receptor CDR3 alpha chain region to establish the presence of positive selection of CD8 T cells involved in the autoimmune pathogenesis of Type I Diabetes in the beta chain transgenic NOD mouse. Mentor: Charles A. Janeway, Jr., M.D., Professor of Immunobiology, Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology and Dermatology. He is also receiving a HHMI Continued Fellowship award to assist in his return to medical studies.
