Notes: Pericardial effusions, depending on size and speed of accumulation, may compromise venous return to the heart. This results in low cardiac output that can only be relieved by catheter drainage if identified in time. Classical echo findings include diastolic collapse of the right ventricle, plethoric inferior vena cava that does not reduce diameter when the patient "sniffs", and significant respiratory variation of the doppler mitral inflow pattern.
