Colorectal Screening a Success

In recognition of Colon Cancer Awareness Month, Yale Digestive Diseases, in partnership with Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center, offered a free consultation for colon cancer screening on March 7, 2009. Twenty-five volunteer gastroenterologists, health care providers, endoscopy nurses, administrators and schedulers welcomed 50 patients who attended the event. The patients filled out a risk assessment about their medical and family history. They watched a seven minute American Cancer Society video tape explaining colon cancer screening and then were evaluated by a health care provider. 28 patients were scheduled for colonoscopies of whom 14 did not have insurance. For these patients all colonoscopy and pathology fees are being waived and performed by gastroenterologists at Yale University.
