Clinical Interests

My academic interests and clinical practice are focused around clinical care of patients with gastroenterology and liver diseases and advanced endoscopic procedures.

I direct an advanced endoscopy center at VACT in West Haven and offer therapeutic ERCP, Endoscopic ultrasound, Argon Plasma Coagulation, Endoscopic mucosal resection and video capsule endoscopy. At the West Haven VA we are particularly interested in pre-malignant and early malignant lesions of the gastro-intestinal tract and their endoscopic management. Another area of interest is acute pancreatitis including management of patients with severe acute pancreatitis, nutrition in acute pancreatitis and prevention of acute pancreatitis.

Procedures performed by me include endoscopic mucosal resection of short and long segment Barrett's esophagus with dysplasia, removal of very large colonic adenoma, Endoscopic management of pain in chronic pancreatitis, EUS staging of GI malignancies, Endoscopic pseudocyst drainage, FNA of pancreatic malignancies, enteral and biliary stent placement for benign and malignant luminal obstruction and celiac plexus block. Recently we have become interested in lung cancers and offer FNA and staging of lung cancers by trans-esophageal EUS. We plan to offer endo-bronchial ultrasound in the near future. I also serve as the consultant gastroenterologist for the cancer center at the West Haven VA.

Research Interests

I am interested in clinical studies that examine the value of interventions for detecting and treating GI diseases. We have a large clinical practice and some of our present clinical studies include the value of surveillance of Barrett's esophagus, screening intervals for colo-rectal cancer surveillance, interventions to prevent post-ERCP pancreatitis and use of con-focal microscopy in management of pre-malignant mucosal GI diseases.

In addition to my research interests, I serve as associate editor of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology.

Teaching Interests

The section of digestive diseases is dedicated to the teaching and training of medical students, residents and GI fellows. I am the director of the Yale medical student's second year digestive disease module (pathophysiology course), co-director of the ambulatory clerkship on abdominal pain and site director of the Yale GI fellowship at the West Haven VA. I enjoy teaching and am interested in developing and applying a variety of teaching methods to assist with student education.
