Clinical research focusing on Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia.
Patient-related Activities and Clinical Interests
- I am the Medical Director for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program at Yale University. The IBD Program is a multi-disciplinary program with medical, surgical, pediatric, pathology, and radiology specialists all participating. Additionally, a program coordinator assists patients in scheduling procedures, labs and other activities. An ostomy nurse is active in patient care, particularly involving ostomy care, but also other aspects of nursing care and education. I evaluate patients twice per week at Temple Medical Center, 40 Temple Street in New Haven, CT. Patients are self-referred as well as referred from other physicians. To schedule an appointment, please call 203-785-4138.
- I am the gastroenterologist for the Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) Center at Yale. I evaluate and treat patients with HHT who have gastrointestinal bleeding and other gastrointestinal related problems. To schedule an appointment, please call 203-785-4138 or Katharine Henderson at 203-737-5395.
- I perform upper endoscopies and colonoscopies on patients, particularly for colon cancer screening. I interpret capsule endoscopy studies that are performed in our gastroenterology procedure center. Please call 203-785-4138 for an appointment.
Educational Activities and Teaching Interests
- I am the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director at Yale University. We have an active three-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited, Gastroenterology Fellowship program with 18 fellows. We have a five-year accreditation from the ACGME.
Our program uses the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for fellowship applications and we offer all of our positions through the National Resident Matching Program/Subspecialties Matching Services (NRMP/SMS or “the Match”).
- Working with others in the American Gastroenterological Association-Institute (AGA-I), I was involved in re-instating the National Gastroenterology (GI) Fellowship Match in 2006, which is administered by the National Resident Matching Program/Subspecialties Matching Services (NRMP/SMS). Since 2006, gastroenterology fellowship applications have been entered through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
- Through my involvement with the AGA-Institute, I have revised the national Core Curriculum that gastroenterology fellowship programs use for training fellows.
- I recently chaired the Gastroenterology Training Examination (GTE®) that is the inservice examination offered annually to all gastroenterology fellows. The AGA-Institute organizes and administers the examination.
Research Activities and Interests
- I do clinical research with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients including assessing patient preferences in medication usage and setting up databases to correlate genotype with phenotypic expression. I also do research to decide the best test or method that will determine when a patient is having an increase in their symptoms (flare).
- I do clinical research in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) who also have gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.
- I do clinical research on the Gastroenterology (GI) Fellowship Match.
