Cover: The chemotactic migration of leukocytes toward an inflammation site involves a complex set of interactions between several cell types (neutrophils, adjacent cells, and bacteria) and several mediators (combinations of chemoattractant gradients). Chemoattractants are released by endothelial cells, by activated stromal cells (macrophages, epithelial cells), and by the inflammatory targets, ie, bacteria or dying cells. The direction of neutrophil movement is first guided by the steepest local chemoattractant gradient and is then regulated by successive receptor desensitization and attraction by secondary distant agonists.
