SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS     

Collection Requirements:    HSV isolate in cell culture is required before susceptibility testing can be done.

Reference Range Comment:   


    Sensitive: <10% of HSV plaques remain in presence of 3 mcg/mL ACV

 

Reflexive Testing Criteria:    ID50 assay performed only on HSV isolates that are indeterminate by rapid acyclovir assay.

Clinical Indication Criteria:    Patient must have failed intravenous therapy.

Additional Notes:    Lack of response may be seen with oral acyclovir due to poor absorption of drug, suboptimal dosing or poor compliance. Therefore, a course of intravenous therapy is recommended before drug resistance is assumed.
