SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Collection Requirements:
HSV isolate in cell culture is required before susceptibility testing can be done.
Reference Range Comment:
Sensitive to acyclovir: IC50 <= 2 µg/mL
Resistant to acyclovir: IC50 > 2 µg/mL
Reflexive Testing Criteria:
ID50 performed on HSV isolates that are indeterminate by rapid acyclovir assay.
Clinical Indication Criteria:
Patient must have failed intravenous therapy.
Additional Notes:
Lack of response may be seen with oral acyclovir therapy due to poor absorption of drug, suboptimal dosing or poor compliance. Therefore, a course of intravenous therapy is recommended before drug resistance is assumed.
