Lesson in dissection, woodcut from
Joannes de Ketham (15th cent.), Fasciculus medicinae. Venice: Joannes and Gregorius de
Gregoriis, 5 February 1493/94.
This compendium of medical treatises collected by Ketham, possibly Johann von Kirscheim, a professor of medicine in
Vienna, was first published in Venice in 1491 by the brothers Joannes and Gregorius de Gregoriis. It was the first illustrated
anatomical book to appear in print. In the Italian edition of 1493, also published by the de Gregoriis, all but one of the
woodcuts were redrawn in a more modern representational style. The full color illustrations found in some copies,
including that of the Historical Library, were possibly accomplished by hand held color blocks or a stencil.
