Clinical Evidence
Clinical Evidence summarizes the current state of knowledge and uncertainty about the prevention and treatment of clinical conditions, based on thorough searches and appraisal of the literature. It is neither a textbook of medicine nor a set of guidelines. It describes the best available evidence from systematic reviews, RCTs and observational studies where appropriate, and if there is no good evidence it says so.

RefWorks Video Tutorials
Nine video tutorials on the basics of using RefWorks. You will learn how to import citations from PubMed, how to insert citations into Word, how to format your bibliography and paper, how to export references, etc.

Need help organizing your research?

With RefWorks you can create your own personal research database of citations to books, journal articles, and web pages, by importing references from online databases. You can use these references in writing papers and then automatically format the bibliography in a selected style and insert into your paper. RefWorks is web-based and is available across various platforms including Windows, Mac, Unix, etc.

Citations imported into RefWorks will display with Yale links. These links will lead to electronic full text (when available) along with other library services, such as Interlibrary Loan.

RefShare allows you to easily share a folder of RefWorks citations with others at Yale University. You will be able to read, print and export these references to your own RefWorks database.

 

Small Conference Room

The recently refurbished Gordon Conference Room is available. Conveniently located across from the Circulation Desk, this room is outfitted with a 19" monitor for both MAC and PC. TOXNET is a cluster of databases covering toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health and related areas. It is managed by the Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program (TEHIP) of the National Library of Medicine. TOXNET provides free access to and easy searching of ten databases.

Eli Express

Eli Express is a time-saving delivery service that allows library users to have books paged from any of the participating Yale libraries for delivery to a selected library. This service is available to faculty, students, and staff of Yale University. Books requested should be available for pickup at the selected library within 24 hours of placing the request, Monday through Friday.

Eli Express may be used only for books. Journals, periodicals, non-circulating material, course reserve material, rare books, and microtexts may not be requested through Eli Express at this time.

In Orbis, you can request Eli Express delivery of library materials directly from the catalog. How? Just search for the item you need, click on Place Requests, and follow the instructions. No more cutting and pasting from the catalog!

Off-Campus Access

Remote access to databases, electronic books and journals, and other electronic full-text information resources is available to students, faculty and staff of Yale University as well as employees and attending physicians from Yale-New Haven Hospital.  For information on the two remote access options: Yale VPN and the Medical Library Proxy Server.

AGRICOLA

AGRICOLA is a comprehensive database for identifying agriculture research publications in the English language. Its multidisciplinary coverage reflects the contents of the National Agricultural Library and includes over 2000 sources from journal and books, technical reports, government reports and patents to web documents. Subject coverage includes animal science, agriculture, dairy science, entomology, nutrition, plant and water sciences, plant genetics and more.

The Cushing/Whitney Medical Digital Library is a growing collection of digital resources available on the Web for scholarship. The Medical Digital Library Committee coordinates the library's digitization activities. Its goals include expanding access to the library's unique collections for scholarly research, and life-cycle management of digital objects. Journal Citation Reports (JCR)

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is a tool for journal evaluation, covering more than 7,500 of the world's most highly cited peer-reviewed journals in approximately 200 disciplines. It presents quantifiable statistical data allowing users to determine the relative importance of journals within a field. Authors can identify journals in which to publish, confirm the status of journals in which they have published, and identify journals relevant to their research.  The 2006 data is now available.

GIDEON

GIDEON (Global Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology Online Network) is an easy to use online resource that helps you diagnose infectious diseases and stay up to date on the latest trends in epidemiology and treatment. GIDEON is used for diagnosis and reference in the field of tropical and infectious diseases, epidemiology, microbiology and antimicrobial chemotherapy. Equipment for Loan

The following equipment is available for loan from the Circulation Desk:

  • Cameras: Three digital cameras are available for use.  We recommend a reservation just complete the form. A digital video camcorder is also available.
  • Laptops: Medical Center Student Laptops (see laptops)
  • External Wireless Loaner Cards (see wireless cards)
  • Slide Projectors: There are several available, and each projector includes; a spare bulb, remote switch, remote extension cord, and electrical extension cord.
  • Overhead Projectors: Two are available.
  • DVD/VCR Monitor: One is available for use.

The Merck Index

The Merck Index, an encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals, is now available online.

Compounds included: human and veterinary drugs; biotech drugs and monoclonal antibodies; substances used for medical imaging; biologicals and natural products; plant and herbal medicines; laboratory reagents and catalysts; environmentally significant substances and much more.

Information provided: chemical, common and generic names; trademarks and associated companies; CAS Registry Numbers; chemical structures; molecular formulae, weights and percentage composition; capsule statements identifying compound classes and scientific significance; scientific and patent literature references; physical and toxicity data; therapeutic and commercial uses; and caution and hazard information.

Consumer Health

Looking for consumer health information? The Medical Library has a web page of consumer health information for patients and consumers. This web page gathers into one convenient place consumer health resources including books and journals in the library, a link to search MEDLINEplus, the National Library of Medicine’s consumer health web site, and top consumer health sites selected by library staff. Topics range from health and wellness, diseases and conditions to drug information, medical tests and more.

Bates Visual Guide to Physical Examination

A comprehensive way to teach and refine physical examination skills is to try the time-tested Barbara Bates’ method. This resource consists of 18 anatomy and system specific videotapes. Each video shows a step-by-step demonstration of appropriate examination techniques along with audio content that describes the procedure and the rationale. The 4th edition includes new information on health history, documentation, communication, and, patient/practitioner interactions.

Evidence-based Practice

Evidence-based practice (EBP) resources are culled into one web page on the Medical Library web site.  If you need information for practicing or teaching, consult this page. Databases, e-journals, practice guidelines, tutorials and more are included.  Have you ever tried the ACP-PIER database or the TRIP (Turning Research into Practice) database?  Remember reference librarians can also assist you in finding EBP information and selecting the best resource for your search.

Household Products Database

What’s under your kitchen sink…
in your garage, in your bathroom, and on the shelves in your laundry room? Learn more about the ingredients of common household products, about their potential health effects, and proper safety and handling.  The Household Products Database is a comprehensive listing of the chemical ingredients, health effects and manufacturers of over 6,000 widely used consumer products. Browse categories including auto products, inside the home, pesticides, landscape & yard, personal care, home maintenance, arts & crafts, pet care, and home office, browse alphabetically, or search the database by brand name, type of product, or manufacturer.

Using your laptop in the Library
 
There are network connections and wireless access points for laptops in the Medical Library. All laptops must be registered with ITS though before they will work on the university network.  For those users without wireless capability, the Library also loans external wireless cards for use while in the Library.

Wired Network Access
Wired ethernet jacks are available in the Medical Library, live connections are marked with a label next to the connection. The Library has two carrels in the reading room with ethernet jacks and cables. Several jacks with cables are also located on the computer tables in the center of the Information Room.
 
Wireless Network Access
The Library offers access to Yale's wireless network. The network supports the 802.11b Wi-Fi standard. All wireless cards must be registered and properly configured to gain access to the wireless network. A VPN (Virtual Private Networking) connection is also required.

With 10,000 protocols, Current Protocols contains the largest collection of authoritative, peer-reviewed, regularly-updated research methods and topical overviews available.
The Current Protocols series provides details of lab methods and step-by-step techniques useful to molecular biology and protein science investigations. The source for new and cutting-edge methods, the database is updated quarterly and reviewed periodically to keep all the protocols up-to-date. Current Protocols spans all areas of the life sciences.

images.MD

images.MD compiles over 50,000 images from more than 90 collections, ranging from allergy to cardiology to neurology to urology. Each image is accompanied by detailed and informative text contributed by more than 2000 medical experts. images.MD provides access to full-sized, high quality images in step with the latest developments in medicine. Start your own image library, create PowerPoint presentations, and order customized CD-ROMs of your favorite slides if you also register.

PubMed’s Clinical Queries feature

Clinical Queries (access from the blue side bar on the PubMed page) provides the following specialized PubMed searches for clinicians including:

  • Clinical Study Categories: Find citations corresponding to a specific clinical study category.
  • Systematic Reviews: Find citations for systematic reviews, meta-analyses, reviews of clinical trials, evidence-based medicine, consensus development conferences, and guidelines.
  • Medical Genetics: Find citations related to various topics in medical genetics

AMED

Looking for information on complementary medicine, palliative care and allied health?  These subjects are covered in the AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine) database available through Ovid.  Over 500 biomedical journals are indexed regularly as well as selected books and newspapers. Strongly European, a large number of the journals are not indexed by any other source.  AMED is a valuable resource for health care professionals needing information on acupuncture, osteopathy, Chinese medicine, homeopathy, hospice care, hypnosis, herbalism, chiropractic, holistic treatments, and rehabilitation and more.  Covers 1985 to present and produced by the Health Care Information Service of the British Library.

Yale Links

Yale Links is a direct link to the full online version of a journal article. If you find a citation to an article you want to read and then need a shortcut to the online article, try Yale Links. The “Yale Links” button appears in many databases such as Medline, PubMed, and CINAHL. Click here to see if your favorite database is Yale Links enabled. You can use this button to quickly locate the full article without even leaving the database you are searching.

Proteome Bioknowledge Library

A suite of databases focused on the compilation of available protein information. The information is gathered from relevant, newly published biological literature and is updated on a weekly basis. The data is then presented in an easy to use format. Proteome BioKnowledge(R) Library focuses on mammalian species, model organisms, and human fungal pathogens. Ecosal, a new Web resource based on the classic publication Escherichia coli and Salmonella: Cellular and Molecular Biology. Continually update, EcoSal is a comprehensive archive of knowledge on the enteric bacterial cell. The database is comprised of several hundred modules of information and interpretation with links to cognate sites containing extensive tabular and pictorial presentations, as well as to active databases of primary research information. Essential Science Indicators

Essential Science Indicators (ESI) is a unique and comprehensive compilation of science performance statistics and science trends data based on journal article publication counts and citation data from Thomson Scientific databases. It covers a multidisciplinary selection of 11,000+journals from around the world.
