The Library's E-Journals Database provides a quick way to find out if Yale has an online subscription to the journal in which the article you are looking for was published. This tutorial will demonstrate how to browse and search the E-Journals Database.

Scenario

We will continue to use the scenario for the previous tutorial - Verifying Citations Using Single Citation Matcher . Now that we have verified the citation of the article we are looking for, which is as follows:

Hasson, GK. Inflammation, atherosclerosis, and coronary artery disease. N Engl J Med. 2005 Apr 21;352(16):1685-95.

Now we want to see if the Library has an online subscription to The New England Journal of Medicine, where the article was published.

Accessing the E-Journals Database

You can easily access the E-Journals Database from the Medical Library home page. There is a link for "E-Journals" under "Resources" section in the left column of the page. Click on that link to access the E-Journals Database.

Finding an E-Journal

From the E-Journals page, we can see that there are a number of ways of locating an e-journal:

  1. You can do a search for the journal;
  2. If you know the exact title of the journal, you can use our alphabetical list of e-journals; you can also browse our selected e-journals list by subject.

E journals search interface

In our example, since we know that we are looking for The New England Journal of Medicine, we will simply do a title search using "New England Journal of Medicine" as our search terms.

 Entering Search Terms

E-Journals Database Search Result

We can see that our search returned a number of results, but not every result returned is what we want. This is because there are other journals that match the search criteria.

E journals search result

We can see that Yale subscribes to the online full text of The New England Journal of Medicine, and we can then click on the title or "full text" link to access the full text.
