Quick Help for using HST via WWW:
How to get there from MedMenu:
Select "Additional Resources (A-Z)." Click on History of Science and Technology in the alphabetical list.
How to get there from the Research Work Station:
Choose "Electronic Databases & Journals." Click on "History of Science and Technology" in the alphabetical list. To the right of "Eureka on the Web," choose search options [Simple Search] or [Advanced Search]. HST uses the Eureka Interface. Click on "Send" after each command.
Searching by title:
Type the exact title, starting with the first word, but omitting initial articles. It is not necessary to type the whole title. Include punctuation but omit parentheses and semicolons. Example: typing "Poison in the Pot" will retrieve Poison in the Pot: Legacy of Lead. Select one or more titles.
Searching by Title word:
Advanced search: choose just a few specific words, such as poison and pot. Use "?" for plurals, variations or to truncate. For French or Italian words with an attached article (l',d'), follow directions for subject word below.
Searching by keyword:
Type words from an author, title, or subject. The words must come from one author's name, or one title or one subject heading. Example: toxicology.
Searching by author:
Type a person's name, last name first, or the first words of an organization's name. Example: Eamon, W. You will receive a list of citations with Eamon, William and one with Eamon, William C. As you see, the same author is cited differently. You must check all citations.
Searcing by author word
Advanced search: Do not use initials to search full first names. Include hyphens. For organizations, close up hyphenated words.
Searching by journal
Type the exact title. Omit articles. Use punctuation except for () and ;. Example: Bulletin of the history of medicine.
Searching by subject
Use the exact subject heading. Include punctuation but omit () and ;.
Searching by subject word
Advanced search: Choose a distinctive word or phrase. Combine subject terms with and. For French or Italian words that might have an article such as d' or l' attached, search both with and without the article.
