Illustration from Manuscript 28, The Paneth Codex
Noted for its many fine gold-leaf miniatures and illustrations of surgical instruments,
the Paneth Codex, written on vellum in Bologna, ca. 1300, is a compendium of medieval medical and
surgical knowledge. Its 41 manuscripts on medicine and surgery include selections from Galen, Hippocrates,
Constantinus Africanus, Rhazes, Gerardus Cremonensis, Macer Floridus, and others. Held for many years by the
family of Fritz Paneth, who had acquired it from the Cathedral Church at Olmutz,
it was purchased by funds from the Associates of the Yale Medical Library in 1955.
