Medical Books, 15th-19th centuries
Rare books, which include all of the Medical Library's holdings
before 1900, may be consulted in the Historical Reading Room
between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. To determine whether the library owns a particular book, check ORBIS, the Yale University Library catalog. Most nineteenth century books have LC call numbers. Earlier books are arranged by special collection (e.g., 18th cent, 17th cent, Harvey, S.W. Mitchell, Vesalius) and then alphabetically by author and title or according to a special cataloging system. For many books, there are no unique call numbers. Please request these books by collection, author, title and date of publication. The Historical Library owns many pamphlets and ephemera that are not individually cataloged. Finding aids are available in the Library. Books through the nineteenth century are no longer lent via Interlibrary Loan. If the book is18th century or earlier and has 50 or fewer pages, we might be able to have it scanned overhead through Interlibrary Loan. For ninteenth century books, the limit is 100 pages. Microfilm copies may be requested for a fee for any book out of copyright.
