Redinge of olde auctours and storyes my mooste honorable lorde, I fynde that men in tyme paste were of longer lyfe, and of more prosperous helthe: than they are nowe a dayes. Whiche thynge as hit greued me, so in maner hit enforced me,to seke the cause of this sodeyne and strange alteration. For why, hit is written, that Adam lyued.930. yere. The Sibils of Cumane liued .iii.C. wynters: Nestor .iii. C. wynters: Arganton kynge of Tartesses.iii. C. yeres: And Galen that that famous doctour a. C. and xl. yeres, but nowe a daies, alas, if a man may aproche to xl. or .lx. yeres, men repute hym happye and fortunate. But yet howe manye come therto? To serche and gyue the very true reason herof passeth my small capacite: without I may saye hit be, bycause we fulfyll nat the commandementes of all myghtye god, whiche to well wyllynge persons are very lyght and of no burden. For oure lorde saythe, My yocke is swete, and my bourden lyghte to be borne. Saythe not the prophet Dauyd, that who so feareth god, and walkethe in his wayes and preceptes, shall se his childers chyldren. And Salomon sayth, O my chyldren, forgette nat my preceptes and lawes, for they shal kepe you and prolo[n]g your dayes and yeres. And I wylle, saythe oure lorde god by Dauyd, le[n]gthen his dayes. Than may not this be a reasonable cause of this our shorte and wretched lyfe. Trewly I suppose it be by our mislyuynge and fylthy synne; whiche beynge so abominable and soo horryble, is at some tyme the verye cause of corporalle infyrmyte, and of shorte lyfe. Sayde nat our lorde, the phisitian of all phisitians, unto the sycke man: Nowe I have healed the, departe thou from hens, and loke thou synne nomore, leste a worse harme happen uppon the? Or whether shall I saye, that hit chauncethe by our mysse dyete; and to moche surfettynge; Trewelye, the prouerbe saythe, that there dye manye mo by surfette, than by the sworde.

Accordynge wherto the wyse man saythe, Surfette sleethe manye a one: and temperance prolongeth the lyfe. Surfette and dyuersytes of meates and drynkes, lettynge and corruptinge the digestion, febleth man, and very ofte causeth this shortenes of lyfe. What other thynge but mysse diete caused Ptolomeus Philadelphus to be so myserably and peynefullye vexed with the goute, and so as hit is wrytten, that nothynge could relesse his peyne, sauyng deth; What caused Antipater, and that noble man Mecenas, to be continually vexed with the feuer but yl diete. What other thinge infected Aristarcus with the dropsy, but yl dyete. Yll dyete (as me thynkethe) is chyefe cause of all dangerous and intollerable diseases, and of the shortenes of mans lyfe. Than hit must nedes folowe, that a temperate and a moderate dyete, prolongethe mans lyfe, and saveth hym from all suche peynful diseases. And therfore Asclepiades that noble physition, professed, There are .v. necessary thinges to conserue and prolonge mans prosperite, and helth: that is abstinence from meate, abstinence from wyne, rubbynge of the body, exersise, and digestion. O howe holsome is hit than to use good dyete, to lyve temperately, to eschewe excess of meates and drynkes. Yea howe greately are we Englishe men bou[n]de to the maisters of the uniuersite of Salerne (Salerne is in the realme of Naples) whiche vouchesafed in our behalfe to compile this so necessarye, and soo holsome a boke; But what auaylethe it, to have golde or abundance of ryches, if one can nat use hit;

What helpeth costely medicines, if one receyve them nat; So what profyteth us a boke, be hit never so expedyent and frutefulle, if we understande hit nat? wherfore I, consyderynge the fruite that myghte come of this boke, if it were tra[n]slated in to the englyshe tonge (for why, euerye man understandeth nat the latyne) I thoughte it were verye expedyent at some tymes, for the welthe of unlerned persones, to busye my selfe ther in. For lerned persons, and suche as haue greate experie[n]ce, nede no istructio[n]s to diete them selfe, nor to conserue their helth. Yet if such other wise and diserete p[er]sons, as is your lordshyppe, by chaunce rede this boke: they maye perauenture fynde that shall please them: and that besides theyr owne dyete and custome of lyuynge, shall be for theyr corporall welfare and good helth. I wyll nat, nor it becomethe me nat, to exhorte your lordshyp with let of other your great bysynesses, to rede this poore translation: but if per chaunce at your leysoure ye rede it, I humblye desyre and praye your lordeshyppe to rede it with forgyuenes. And to accepte the same as it is worthye.
