Home | Journals & Books | 2006 Journal Migration to E-Only
To support the continued migration from print journals to electronic journals we are repurposing the staff in our Technical Services Department to focus on electronic resources. On September 1, 2005 the Technical Services Department changed its name to Collection Development and Management to reflect its new emphasis on collections and managing electronic resources.
The reorganization began last February when consultants visited the Medical Library, interviewed staff and prepared recommendations for integrating electronic resources into our workflows. This meant that electronic materials would become a routine part of everyone's job. A periodical room usage study in the fall of 2003 had conclusively shown that our patrons prefer electronic access to print. (A recently published article about that study is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.lcats.2005.04.004) To free up staff time for the labor-intensive processes involved in managing electronic resources, we are migrating most of our print subscriptions to online only. The main exceptions will be a core collection of the most significant print titles and those titles which do not currently have an acceptable online version (for example, journals which are only available from aggregator databases). For 2006 the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library is preparing to migrate another 400+ print journals to e-only. All of the titles cancelled in print will continue to be available online. Using tools such as the Brandon Hill Small Medical Library and Brandon Hill Nursing lists and the Abridged Index Medicus, we have identified a list of core clinical titles to retain in print. We are also retaining a selective list of core titles in the basic sciences. To suggest basic science titles to keep in print format, please contact Judy Spak, judy.spak@yale.edu. If there are titles in the clinical specialties which you feel should be retained in print, please contact Cynthia Crooker, cynthia.crooker@yale.edu.
The first of these two PDF documents (Adobe Reader required for viewing) lists the journal titles we have chosen for migration to E-0nly subscriptions. The second document lists the currently designated "core titles".
