Electronic Handbooks and Databases for Evidence Based Health Care

The following is a sample of the electronic nursing handbooks and databases available from the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library and Nursing Library. Consult the full list of electronic books to find resources in other disciplines.

5-Minute Emergency Medicine Consult Focused summaries on topics in emergency medicine arranged by anatomical system.
5 -Minute Infectious Disease Consult Covers diagnosis and treatment of 200 infectious diseases.
5-Minute Pediatric Consult Designed as a quick reference for over 500 commonly encountered problems in infants, children and adolescents.
AAP Red Book: Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (26th ed., 2003) Current AAP recommendations concerning infectious diseases and immunizations for children and adolescents.
ACP-PIER Physicians' Information and Education Resource is a decision-support tool designed for rapid point-of-care delivery of evidence-based guidance.
AHFS Drug Guide(American Society of Hospital Pharmacists) An authoritative resource for drug information. Pediatric and geriatric considerations are included in drug descriptions.
Clinical Evidence An evidence-based practice tool from BMJ, updated twice yearly. It is a compendium of evidence on the effects of common clinical interventions.
Cochrane Library A unique source of evidence-based reliable and up-to-date information on the effects of interventions in health care.
eMedicine Contains over 6,500 clinical review articles in 59 subspecialties, all peer reviewed and continually updated.
Handbook of Geriatric Nursing Care Physiologic changes associated with aging, laboratory values

Johns Hopkins Harriet Lane Handbook

Pediatrics. Includes current treatments, procedures, protocols, management recommendations, and therapeutic and drug information. Also includes a new dermatology chapter with more than 30 color figures, new CDC growth charts, and more. Soft.
Lippincott's Manual of Psychiatric Nursing Care Plans Care plans for 54 commonly encountered psychiatric conditions.
Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide Drug information with nursing considerations, which include assessment, implementation and teaching points.
Manual of Laboratory Diagnostic Tests (Fishbach) Covers commonly performed diagnostic tests. Step-by-step procedures with tips for accurate interpretation of results.
Micromedex Excellent database of drug information. Several important resources are combined here, including PDR and Martindale's.. Interactions, drug identification, adverse effects, and patient education handouts (Spanish available).
Principles and Practice of IV Therapy (Weinstein) Classic reference, updated in 2000. Covers procedures, standards and equipment.
Nursing Care Plans and Documentation (Carpenito) Includes care plans for 91 clinical situations (medical, surgical and diagnostic procedures).

UpToDate

A quick clinical reference tool, aimed mainly at internal medicine generalists and subspecialists. Topic reviews, prepared by a faculty of experts, of clinical issues in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, and pediatrics.
