2010 Yale School of Nursing Praxes are due by Wednesday May 18, 2011! This page is designed to help YSN students complete their scholarly praxis. It includes the requirements for turning in the praxis, front matter to insert in the praxis, and examples of past praxes. Material on Endnote is included, because students should find Endnote to be a helpful tool in completing the praxis. Please keep in mind that the praxis must be submitted to the Student Affairs Office no later than noon on the Wednesday before graduation. Current YSN students who hold a Masters or Doctoral degree in another health care field, have completed a sequence of research courses and either a capstone paper or thesis may apply to waive N525a Nursing Research as a Basis for Evidence-Based Practice, N525b Praxis Seminar and N721a/b Praxis. Please submit the waiver request form and supporting documents to Dr. Martha K. Swartz, Associate Dean For Clinical and Community Affairs, YSN office #242. Each request is reviewed on a case by case basis. |

Praxis Manual
The Praxis Manual is a comprehensive guide designed to give you an insight into how to design your research strategies, what the written requirements are, and information about how the final document should be written and presented.
The scholarly praxis is due at the completion of your course.
APA
Your praxis must follow the guidelines of the Publication Manual of
the American
Psychological Association, 6th ed. You
are advised to purchase the Publication Manual from the bookstore. You will refer to it on many occasions.
Writing Style Guides
The following websites give some very useful tips on the actual writing process. Students in the past have used these aids with great success.
- YSN has produced a print guide to help guide you with questions you may have about writing your Praxis. You will find the "Organizing and Typing Scholarly Manuscripts" to be a great help when preparing your manuscript.
- Grammar Resources from University of Chicago
- Writing Lab from Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL)
- Writer’s Resources from Glendale Community College
This Word file contains pages you must include at the front of your praxis. Download the file and insert the pages at the beginning of your praxis. Look carefully for the places where you must fill in the title of your paper, your name and the type of paper you are submitting.
You may find that citation managers such as RefWorks and Endnote will be very helpful to you in writing your praxis. Both of these programs will help you organize your references, and will automatically create an APA style list of references.
The Library has an Endnote/RefWorks resource Web page, and a special citation management classes are being offered to help you with using it for your praxis. Contact Janene Batten to find out more about these classes.
Refworks or EndNote? RefWorks is web-based and freely available through a link on the Library website. Endnote is machine specific and is available in the YSN Computer Lab and in the Computer Resource Lab in the basement of the Medical Library. Or you can purchase a version and have it on your own computer. Purchase Endnote online from the Yale Eportal. If you are a Yale student you are eligible for discount pricing.
If you are looking for guidance for you topic, please refer to the Faculty Research Interest list which shows the research interests for each of the faculty members here at YSN, as well as the type of Praxis they are willing to advise.
You may use the RefWorks databases to browse the titles and abstracts of YSN praxes from past years. A full print copy of each praxis exists in unbound form in a locked room near the Reference Room at the School of Nursing. YSN Students and Faculty can request access to Praxis from Janene Batten.
