Synchronize your PDA with the Wireless EthIR Lan Port in the Medical Library
|
At the Medical Library's Information Desk, you can now update Web-based services like Avantgo and ePocrates on your PDA quickly and easily over the university's high speed network. You can even perform a complete Hotsync across the network to a computer running Palm Desktop software. The Wireless EthIR Lan Port also works with WinCE devices. See below for additional information on compatibility. If you have questions or would like additional information, contact Mark Gentry.

Setting Up Your Computer
The HotSync manager on your PC must be running and the "Network" option must be checked. Depending on the version of the Palm Desktop software you have, you may be prompted to go into HotSync Setup to select any users who may do a "network" sync.
Performing the HotSync
To Sync, Click on the HotSync Icon and then tap the Sync button.
You can update web-based services like Avantgo and Epocrates at speeds much faster than modem connections (and even faster than serial cradles) with the EtherIR Lan device. You need to initially download the application onto your home or office comput er and transfer it to your computer through a HotSync. You can then perform subsequent updates to the services through the Medical Library's EtherIR connection.
Other Services
You can update other web-based services in a similar manner.
The EtherIR Lan is compatible with the following devices:
Palm handhelds OS 3.3+, *VII OS 3.2+, IBM WorkPad, Sony , Handspring (Requires Palm OS3.3 +), Windows 95/98/2000, Windows CE 2.1+, handheld and Palm-Size PCs, Apple Mac OS, Linux OS and Psion EPOC.
* Palm VII requires an IR enhancement module from Palm Computing, Go to www.palm.com for more information.
**There are possible workarounds for older Palm OS devices, although we have not tested them. There is an Enhanced Infrared Update patch for Palm III devices that may provide connectivity through the EthIR Lan device. IRLink from ISComplete is a 3rd party software that works on pre-3.3 OS Springboard Visors and can be purchased for $19.95.
