Connect from Off-Campus

Remote access to databases, electronic books and journals, and other electronic full-text information resources is available to students, faculty and staff of Yale University as well as employees and attending physicians from Yale-New Haven Hospital. Authorized users may access library resources from off-campus through several methods.

Note that standard Yale School of Medicine remote access options do not provide access to clinical systems at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Hospital affiliates interested in remote access to clinical systems should contact the YNHH Help Desk by phone at 688 HELP or by email hlpdesk@ynhh.com. Yale University affiliates should contact ITS-MED for information on YNHH VPN access page.
REMOTE ACCESS OPTIONS:
Yale VPN
VPN (Virtual Private Networking) provides a secure method of accessing restricted resources on the Yale computer network. The Medical School VPN provides additional security and other features over the browser-based proxy service. Details on the service and configuration instructions are available both for Windows and Macintosh. The VPN is often the best choice for university affiliates. Because the VPN uses university NetID authentication, it is NOT an option for hospital employees nor can be it used unless your NetID password has been created.

Be sure to use the "Yale wireless and library resources" connection profile to gain access to Library resources (this profile was called "YSM_Global" in previous releases of the client). This is the only profile that will provide access to library e-resources.

After selecting your OS, find the entry for "VPN Cisco Client" from the alphabetical listing of software.

Download the VPN Cisco Client from the ITS Software Library

Medical Library Proxy Server
The Medical Library maintains a proxy server that may be used by faculty, students and staff of the Yale School of Medicine AND by employees and affiliates of Yale-New Haven Hospital. You must request access by completing the brief online form on the Medical Library Proxy Server signup page.

Central Campus Proxy Server
Central campus Information Technology Services also maintains a proxy server for remote access to Library resources. Like the VPN, this proxy uses the university NetID authentication system. We recommend that medical campus affiliates use either the Medical VPN or the Medical Library Proxy Server but this is also an option for any university affiliate.

Remote Access PPP Service
Remote Access PPP accounts provide dialup access to University network services (including the Internet) using a modem and software. This is a fee-based service provided by ITS-MED.

Access from Offsite Clinical Locations
The page has information pertinent to remote access from some of Yale's major offsite clinical locations including Waterbury Hospital, West Haven VA and area community health centers.
