New Haven is situated on the central Connecticut coast on Long Island Sound. The city, with a population of approximately 150,000 has experienced bustling growth and development over the last several years. It has a wide variety of restaurants and shops and, together with Yale, offers a rich diversity of theaters, film societies, museums, libraries and orchestras. New York City, Boston and other regions of New England are less than 2 hours away and are easily accessible by car, bus or train. Yale's central location and academic stature has assured that distinguished scientists are regular visitors to the University and produces a rich variety of seminars. Yale is a private university founded in 1701. Currently, the University has a faculty of 2,400, a staff of 5,000, and an enrollment of over 10,000 students, half of whom are in Yale College and half in the twelve graduate and professional schools. Nearly 300 graduate students are registered in biomedical sciences programs. The Department of Neurobiology is located in the School of Medicine and is part of the basic science program of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Department is also an active participant in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program and the Cooperating Programs in the Biomedical Sciences, an organization designed to bring together students and faculty representing all the basic biological sciences at Yale University.
