Yale Neurology Residency
The Yale
Stroke Consultative Service
Stroke is the leading cause of disability in adults in the U.S. Over
800 stroke patients are admitted to Yale-New
Haven Hospital
annually. Stroke patients are admitted to the general neurology
service, the
hospitalist service, as well as other specialty services. It is
important that patients on all these services receive the same standard
of care driven by
evidence-based
medicine. In response to this paradigm, a team comprised of an
attending, nurse
practitioner and junior resident provide consultative services to
all
teams caring for stroke patients. Together with the Senior Ward
Resident and
the neurology resident on the Emergency Department rotation, this team
provides Acute Stroke
Care and
responds to all stroke codes in a coordinated fashion. Stroke code is
the
protocol used for the rapid evaluation of patients with acute
neurologic
deficits to determine whether treatment with thrombolytics is
appropriate.
