Education: B.A., 1972, New York University Research InterestThe primary focus of my research team is the development and evaluation of treatments for cocaine addiction, including pharmacotherapies, behavioral interventions, and "alternative" therapies. In 1992, we established an acupuncture research program at Yale's Substance Abuse Center with the aim of conducting rigorous research into this widely used, but untested, treatment modality. Our research team has subsequently conducted a number of foundational studies in this area, including development of appropriate control conditions, as well as determining relevant outcome measures. Controlled clinical research of acupuncture has included a NIDA-funded, randomized clinical trial of acupuncture for the treatment of cocaine addiction, and participation in the multi-site Cocaine Alternative Treatments Study, which was based on methodology developed at our site. More recently, my colleague, Dr. Avants, and I have been investigating spirituality-focused interventions for the treatment of addiction and HIV risk reduction. As part of a NIDA Stage I behavioral development project, we have developed a manual-guided spirituality-focused intervention -- Spiritual Self-schema (3-S) therapy -- and have evaluated it in preliminary as well as a controlled studies. The intervention has shown efficacy in reducing HIV risk behavior, and is being further evaluated in residential and other settings. A group-level intervention for decreasing HIV risk for drug abusers developed at our unit is the Holistic Health Recovery Program (HHRP), which has shown efficacy in two randomized clinical trials, in populations of both HIV-negative and HIV-positive methadone-maintained patients. HHRP is now being disseminated nation-wide as part of the Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
