Research Interest

The major focus of my clinical research has been to improve the efficacy, accessibility, and availability of substance abuse treatment through clinical trials and clinical epidemiologic studies. The general themes of my research and approaches utilized are evident in the major, interrelated programs of research that I have developed aimed at: 1. improving the efficacy of opioid agonist maintenance treatment through investigations of buprenorphine as an alternative to methadone for maintenance treatment and investigations of adjunctive behavioral (e.g., contingency management, community reinforcement approach, and behavioral drug and HIV risk reduction counseling) and pharmacological (e.g., disulfiram) treatments for co-occurring cocaine dependence, 2. improving the accessibility and effectiveness of opioid dependence treatment by integrating it in office-based and primary care settings, and 3. expanding opioid dependence treatment and clinical research in international settings. I am currently evaluating buprenorphine and naltrexone treatment of opioid dependence in clinical trials in Malaysia and Iran, evaluating behavioral and HIV risk reduction counseling and abstinence contingent take-home buprenorphine in a primary care clinic in New Haven and in Malaysia, and developing behavioral treatments for methadone maintained opioid dependent patients.
