Research Interest

My research focuses on eating disorders and weight management. Current research projects span several interrelated topics:

  • Predictors of treatment outcome. These projects seek to identify and test structural models in the etiology and maintenance of eating disturbances, and to identify predictors of treatment outcome for weight loss and/or binge eating.
  • The influence of cigarette smoking and history of smoking on factors related to binge eating. Included in this research are investigations of craving and emotional eating among individuals with binge eating problems and a history of smoking.
  • Gastric bypass surgery. This research investigates psychosocial characteristics and psychological functioning of gastric bypass surgery patients before and after weight loss.
  • Psychometrics. This research aims to improve the psychometric properties of measures assessing various aspects of eating behaviors and features of eating disturbances.
  • Woven throughout much of this research are investigations of race/ethnicity, gender, and other potential moderators of the relationship between psychological functioning and obesity and eating disturbances.
