Response to Sick Animal Report


  1. Sick animal report is filled out by YARC technician, investigator or VCS technician
  2. Reviewed for completeness by YARC supervisor and initialed
  3. A copy is picked up by VCS technician on daily rounds - unless urgent - then the supervisor or YARC technician contacts VCS directly by phone or beeper
  4. VCS technician examines animal
    1. noting symptoms
    2. any other cage identification, strain designation, experimental manipulations, etc.
  5. VCS technician and/or veterinarian contacts the investigator or their representative
    1. obtain history of experimental use, any illness noted by the investigator and possible complications due to experimental procedure
    2. explain possible problem
    3. probable treatment
    4. prognosis
    5. discuss how treatment may affect experimental results
    6. provide any other information that may be pertinent to the management of the case
  6. Start file
    1. fill out history sheet
    2. assign VCS case number if animal has not been previously treated, place this number on cage card
  7. Place VCS number, animal ID and location on investigator file card for future reference
  8. Place daily treatment sheet in area notebook
  9. Consult with veterinarian to institute diagnostic procedures and treatment
  10. At end of treatment all daily records, labwork, etc. should be filed in the animal's permanent record which is maintained by VCS
