    From PBS's FRONTLINE: In 1999, Alabama computer programmer Bill Jack Gaither was murdered in a violent hate crime. The accused killer testified he killed Gaither because he was "queer." Why are gays like Gaither and Matthew Shepard the targets of such brutality? FRONTLINE and Forrest Sawyer explore roots of homophobia in America as a catalyst for hate crimes and as a social phenomenon.

  • Serving Transgender Patients: The Doctor-Patient Relationship

    Please join the Gay-Straight Medical Alliance as we explore the many facets of the relationship between transgender individuals and their health care providers. Members of the transgender community will share their personal experiences and perspectives as we attempt to answer the important question: How can we as health care providers better serve the transgender community? Also, Dr. Kristopher Fennie from the School of Nursing will discuss his ongoing research on transgender patients' emotional and physical experiences with health care services, and their level of trust in their health care provider.

  • discussion/dinner with Dr. Gerald Friedland, director of the Yale AIDS program
  • surveys of the first and second year classes on National Coming Out Day to learn about Yale Medical Students' attitudes and beliefs about LGBT people, the results of which were presented by Dr. Jim Perlotto in his annual panel discussion with the first-years on LGBT sensitivity for healthcare providers
  • panel discussion/dinner about being gay in the healthcare workplace (as resident and attending physicians, being openly gay during the residency application process, etc.)
  • Gay Club Med
  • annual meet and greet at Bar for LGBT students, residents, attendings, staff, etc.
