Music in New Haven

Music venues in the city range from classical through acoustic to rock. The New Haven Symphony is one of the oldest in the country and has a very active schedule including numerous guest performances. The Yale Symphony Orchestra and the Yale School of Music sponsor a number of guest concerts by internationally known performers each year as well.

Chamber Music Society at Yale

The Society offers a subscription series of eight concerts during the academic year -- six featuring internationally renowned guest artists and two showcasing talents of faculty and staff at the Yale School of Music.

New Haven Symphony Orchestra

The fourth oldest orchestra in the United States, this symphony provides a variety of performances, from a season concert series in Woolsey Hall to free summer performances on the New Haven Green. The symphony also manages an outreach program to local schools, performing for over 10,000 students every year.

Orchestra New England

This popular orchestra offers a season concert series at Yale's Battell Chapel and summer pop concerts sponsored by local corporations and civic organizations. The critically acclaimed orchestra frequently can be heard on Connecticut Public Radio.

Outdoor Summer Concerts on the Green

Since 1980, this summer series on the Green has brought outstanding jazz musicians to free summer concerts held on Saturday evenings in July. Presented by the City of New Haven Office of Cultural Affairs, past artists have included the Glenn Miller Orchestra and Spyro Gyra.

Yale School of Music

Student recitals, productions by the opera department, a chamber music series and faculty artist pieces are just some of the performances offered during the academic year. Most performances take place in Sprague Memorial Hall or Woolsey Hall.
