Airborne Precautions
Food and Nutrition
Disposable dishware and trays are not required for patients
on Airborne Precautions for infection control purposes.
Food trays and nutritional supplements for patients on Airborne Precautions will be delivered to the patient care unit by food service
personnel, and delivered to patients by the nursing staff. Food
service personnel will not deliver food trays or nourishments
directly to the rooms of patients on Airborne Precautions.
The meal trays of patients on Airborne Precautions will be
returned to the kitchen by food service personnel if they are
left on the food truck. However, food trays will not be returned
if they contain any patient care equipment. In the rare event
that dishes, utensils, or food trays are contaminated with blood
or bloody drainage, return the items to Central Sterile Supply
(CSS) for reprocessing, using the following procedure:
Place the items in a "decontamination bag".
Close the bag tightly using a tie.
Fill out an "F-9 Requisition" form and attach it to the bag.
Remove the bagged items from the area for return to CSS where they will be reprocessed.
