YNHH Criteria for the Discontinuation of Airborne Precautions for Suspected/Confirmed Multidrug Resistant Pulmonary Tuberculosis
  Risk Factors for MDR-TB  
MDR-TB Suspected
or
Confirmed
1. HIV+ and who have an epidemiologic link to an MDR-TB case.
2. Recently residing in New York City or any other region where MDR-TB is prevalent.
3. Previously treated for MTB.
4. Foreign born individuals from areas of the world where MDR-TB is prevalent.
1. There must be clinical improvement.
2. 3 consecutive sputum cultures not smears, obtain on separate days are negative for MTB.
3. The patient has been able to consistently take and retain medicine.
4. The patient is taking at least two anti-tuberculous agents to which the organism is sensitive.
Patients with pulmonary MDR-TB will remain on Airborne Precautions for the duration of their hospitalization. When the patient meets the criteria for discontinuation of Airborne Precautions as noted above, the patient may be discharged from YNHH. On readmission, such individuals must be placed on Airborne Precautions immediately until their status for infectivity and potential transmission has been clarified.
