General Control Measures
The control of nosocomial RSV is complicated by the continuing chance for its re-introduction through infected patients, staff, and visitors. A variety of measures need to be instituted to control and to prevent the spread of RSV. These include:
Screen symptomatic patients for RSV by using rapid diagnostic techniques during respiratory season. If the rapid RSV diagnostic test result is not available on admission, place the patient on both Contact and Droplet Precautions until the test result is known
Place infected patients on Contact Precautions in a private room. When a private room is not available, the patient may be cohorted in a room with a patient(s) who has an active infection with the same organism but with no other infection requiring the use of a private room. Confine patients to their room as much as possible. Maintain Contact Precautions for the duration of illness.
Contact Precautions require the use of gowns and gloves for patient contact and contaminated objects. Change gowns and gloves between patients and after touching contaminated objects.
Wash hands after contact with a patient or after touching respiratory secretions or the environment potentially contaminated with respiratory secretions whether or not gloves are worn.
Staff with respiratory illness should report to the Occupational Health Service to be evaluated for fitness to work.
Screen and exclude visitors who are noted to signs and symptoms of respiratory infection.
